Inter defeat Palermo to retain Coppa ItaliaInter lift the Coppa Italia for the fourth time in seven years

Samuel Eto'o scored twice and Diego Milito struck late on to give FC Internazionale Milano a 3-1 win against ten-man US Città di Palermo in a pulsating Coppa Italia final in Rome.

FC Internazionale Milano defeated ten-man US Città di Palermo 3-1 to retain the Coppa Italia in Rome and give Leonardo his first trophy as coach.

Samuel Eto'o scored similar goals in each half of the Stadio Olimpico encounter and although Ezequiel Muñoz reduced arrears late on, he was to be sent off before Diego Milito's clincher. Inter's seventh Coppa Italia is a consolation after a season in which they lost both their Serie A and UEFA Champions League titles.

Palermo started the game in attacking mode, with Abel Hernández coming close to scoring when he hit the side netting. After 20 minutes Júlio César was forced to rush out to save at Javier Pastore's feet following a clever one-two with Josip Iličič.

The Sicilian club continued to dominate but it was Inter who took the lead after 26 minutes when Wesley Sneijder's defence-splitting pass sent Eto'o through in a one-on-one with Salvatore Sirigu and the Cameroon striker found the far corner with a precise, low shot.

The goal did not change the flow of the game, with Palermo continuing to attack: Júlio César was forced into a wonderful save to stop Hernández's shot, which had taken a deflection off Cristian Chivu, and denied the same player two minutes before the interval.

On the hour, Júlio César produced another save from Fabrizio Miccoli's close-range header and soon after Chivu's timely tackle stopped Hernández's goal-bound shot following another brilliant pass by Pastore. As in the first half, however, Inter scored against the run of play, with Sneijder once more the provider and Eto'o the finisher with another low shot in off the far post.

In what was a frantic finale, Muñoz halved the deficit by heading in Miccoli's corner but was sent off a minute later for a foul on Goran Pandev, who then crossed from the left for Milito to make it 3-1.

Eto'o said: "I'm glad because you play football to win trophies and the 2010/11 season would have been less sweet if we had ended it without one. It was a fantastic game and we are glad the fans of both sides enjoyed it. They come here to watch good matches and I think we gave them just that tonight."

Schalke hit five to win German Cup in styleSchalke celebrate their first German Cup triumph since 2002

FC Schalke 04 have secured a spot in next season's UEFA Europa League thanks to a 5-0 victory against MSV Duisburg in the German Cup final in Berlin.

After a cautious but physical start by both teams, it was Schalke who created the first presentable opening following a José Manuel Jurado set piece in the 14th minute. The ball ended up with Kyriakos Papadopoulos but his header was kept out by Duisburg keeper David Yelldell.

Four minutes later, however, Yelldell was beaten by 17-year-old Julian Draxler, who fired in a powerful volley from just outside the penalty area. Matters soon got worse for Duisburg, Klaas-Jan Huntelaar doubling Schalke's lead in the 22nd minute. Jefferson Farfán, who had already set up Draxler for his goal, played a wonderful pass into the area and the Netherlands striker did the rest from ten metres.

Duisburg attempted to fight back before half-time and had plenty of chances to reduce Schalke's lead, but found themselves three behind just before the break when Benedikt Höwedes headed in a Farfán corner.

Ten minutes into the second half it was Jurado's turn to add his name to the scoresheet with a clinical strike into the bottom corner from 12 metres. Huntelaar completed the scoring 20 minutes from time to ensure the Royal Blues secured their first German Cup triumph since 2002.

"We played a very focussed match and in the end it was a clear victory," said coach Ralf Rangnick. "Obviously it's very pleasing to end the season with a trophy. We are very proud of the team." Rangnick's Duisburg counterpart, Milan Šašić, added: "We are disappointed because we failed to compete for the trophy today; a big thank you to all our fans for supporting us and showing understanding. We can be proud of what we achieved in the DFB Cup this season."
